The Sun in the 4th house

The Sun in the 4th house shows the development of roots which include family, heritage and ancestral background. It is important for those with this placement to have their own home which they can be proud. The Family background affects confidence and identity. The relationship with the father may be important and the solar light may be projected. Sometimes the individual is heavily influenced by his father’s wants and creative expression. The forth house describes the emotional undercurrents and hidden factors that shape our conscious personality.

The past has a powerful influence over the unfolding personality. Sun in 4th house can feel fulfilled through creating a home that gives them a sense of security and safety. The depths of their early feelings may need to be explored and they sometimes stay near the childhood home, maintaining early relationships. Some leave and emigrate from their early home to recreate their roots. The struggle and challenge for a 4th house Sun is individuating their own identify, separate from their family. Sometimes they work from home and spend most of their time there. There can be a strong need to shine as an individual in the family. Others are focused on their spiritual and inner development.

“The sense of a “me-in-here” provided by the I.C and the 4th house lends an inner unity to all thought, feelings, perceptions and actions. In the same way we are biologically self-maintaining and self- regulating, the IC and 4th house serve to maintain the individual characteristics of the self in stable form.” By Howard Sasportas

The fourth house Sun represents the inner centre and they may be very private introverted and subjective. Personal security lies at the core of the personality and deep family attachments occur though both positive and negative experiences. The need to establish strong foundations in the world and emotional stability are powerful factors in the destiny of the individual.

Julia Child is recognised as a chef and television personality, she had Sun in Leo in the 4th house. Julia’s father was an important man; he graduated from Princeton and was a Land Manager. Julia built a home with her husband near a Provence town. And they named it La Pitchoune, meaning “the little one”. Child’s own home was transformed into a television set.

Sun: If the lord of the 4th is the Sun or the Sun is in the 4th, and dignified or received, then family life is fortunate and is the center of your purpose in life. Your father probably ran the household when you were young. You may pride yourself in knowing your family history and you have a strong sense of where you belong. If fortune or the aquisition is also here you may become a landlord. If out of sect, then you prefer to keep your life private and tend to shy away from the limelight. If the Sun is in sect while lord of the 4th, then you will prefer the public life, sometimes feeling like your personal life is a little too exposed. If the Sun is in detriment or fall and/or afflicted by malefics, you may not know your father or you become estranged from him. You may have trouble benefiting from the father's estate or will. Often there is discord and power struggles on the domestic scene and the native may struggle with finding a place to belong, particularly if the birth was nocturnal.

All of this is most likely to be focused upon, and affected by, your home and background. So your roots are very significant in determining what you make of life. You can either get buried in them or use them as a base from which to launch yourself. If there are negative qualities in your early home life, this will dog your progress more than is usual, so it is not until the latter part of life that you begin to prosper.

Even then, this would entail your coming to terms with blocks created in childhood. Your father has a lot to do with all this, for his character has affected you in more ways than you possibly care to admit. Your career or reputation may well involve being the proprietor/owner of some form of establishment or foundation, or simply that you work at or from home. Whatever the case, making a deliberate effort to get away from the home and family scene occasionally is very therapeutic because you can become so bound up in it as to lose your sense of vitality and individuality.

You desire to build strong inner and outer foundations, but, at times,
you may have the wish to retreat from society when life becomes
difficult. The influence of either or both parents is strong for good
or otherwise. There is pride in the home and that is where you want
to shine and show your creativity. That is where you can be the real
you. You want to be king of your castle, but just don't be too
demanding at home. No one likes a dictator.

The house of the Sun represents where we are most able to "shine" and where we long to assert ourselves in some outstanding fashion. A fourth house Sun is traditional, sentimental, nurturing and very attached to home and family. We have a great need to center ourselves and to establish emotional security, often through the family or home environment. Therefore, we may be reluctant to leave our childhood home, and when we do we are likely to feel a strong need to marry or at least establish a home of our own. Sometimes we can be so protective of our home life that we become too authoritarian or too smothering. Since we are so traditional, we tend to view our self or family members as fulfilling a role instead of as individuals. However, if we avoid that we can create a wonderfully nurturing and supportive environment that functions as a strong foundation for our lives
